Ruth Roman is the youngest daughter born to Lithuanian and Jewish parents Mary Pauline Gold (Gold) and Abraham Roman in Lynn, Massachusetts. At the age of five the father was a carnival barker and left her mother with no choice but to be a cleaning woman and waitress to feed the family. Ruth went to school in Boston's tenement region, which was the most deplorable. Her school was closed in two short years to pursue acting. Her journey was not without obstacles. her chosen career path. Then, in New York she was hired to pose for photos for a magazine about crime however, no theatre jobs were forthcoming. The following job she got was the "hat check" girl for a nightclub but she quit and relocated to Boston. She worked as an usherette during the day and then was a part of the New England Repertory Company by night, which was her first permanent acting gig. In addition, she was a drama student and ultimately graduated from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
